Dirtyrat - Why Heavy Rain must succeed

A quick recap for anyone living under a rock Heavy Rain is the latest game by developer Quantic Dream; creators of the critically acclaimed Fahrenheit (aka Indigo Prophecy) and is being released exclusively on PS3 on February 11th.

I'm going to echo the concerns raised by analyst Michael Pachter on Gametrailers Bonus Round... He doesn't think Heavy Rain is likely to be a commercial success and it saddens but I have to agree with him.

Gamers seem to be a habit driven bunch, we bemoan the lack of creativity and more than half of us probably think we could do better as game designers, but when it comes to what we spend our money on, in general it's tried and tested brands with massive marketing behind them, and lets face it, most of them are aimed at the teenage, or "young adult" crowd...where are the games for older gamers with real stories, with real choices with real consequences? Games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect may contain mature elements in their narrative, but why can't we have the same thing in a modern day setting?
Why? Because nobody will buy it.

Heavy Rain is trying to push the boundaries of storytelling in video games. It's trying to appeal to people that don't have to kill something every 5 minutes to feel like they are progressing, it's trying to take interactive entertainment seriously.

I would love to see an Eastenders style video game (yes truly lol), an interactive soap opera could be so much fun. I don't think gamers these days need to feel like they are saving mankind against impossible odds in every single game...or am I the only one who thinks this way?

So please, do gaming a favour and support mature games like this. Give publishers a reason to make similar games for this demographic and BUY Heavy Rain.

I have a €50 voucher set aside specifically for Heavy Rain.

I do agree though, the chances of this doing well are pretty slim but you never know, the PS3 only crowd may get behind it, seeing as the PS3 is finally gathering some momentum and this game has been made a big deal of for a good while.

Also, it doesn't have piracy to worry about on the PS3, which can only help.

I think it'll do OK, if they over market it then their balnce sheet will be fooked but its been hyped to hell virally and in print so it has a good chance.

If games like this didnt exsist though, id give up on gaming, its the narrative beauty of the format that appeals to me and it saddens me whenever landmark titles dont do that well.

Good rant ratty,

PAchter reckons it'll sell about 500k units. Considering UC2 only sold a million, and it was mind blowingly awesome and had a great marketing campaign I'm inclined to agree. I really hope I am proved wrong th1ough.

I know Heavy Rain will not be everyone's cup of tea though, but I hope people can see my concerns are valid.

I've showed my sister a few of the trailers for this and she's mad for it to come out now. This is coming from a woman who, everytime her husband turns on his PS3,she rolls her eyes and leaves the room and has only ever played Wii Sports and Wii Fit. I think if Sony actually advertised this properly, maybe like a movie it might do well. I personally thought that the Uncharted 2 ads were rubbish. They would've been much better had they showed clips of some of the dialogue, like the witty one liners and such and action instead of just the action with some guy speaking over it. People go and see crap films if they think it's going to be funny from the ads,it might just work for games aswell

I completely agree with you mate. & I really hope it succeeds. Like they say in Bonus round though, I hope if it doesnt succeed it doesnt put other devs off putting deep narrative in future games or to try something like this again.

However I doubt I'll be getting it at launch, I hate to say. But it just doesnt look like a game I would enjoy. Plus ive been stung by this type of thing before - ive bought Killer 7, Okami, SoTC, God Hand etc. all at launch & found them for £15 literally 2 weeks later. Im sick of losing so much money on them. I'll definitely play it one day though & completely see where you're coming from.

I will be buying this. Been waiting a while for it. I didn't know that it was out as early as Feb 11th though? I am even more made up as I have this on pre-order and on my birthday (15th) I have Beatles: Rock Band too. Does anyone know the exact release date for yakuza 3 aswell? I will be picking that up, I am sure it is in March sometime.

I've preordered mine,i personally loved Farenheit and much prefer a game with a good story to tell.Videogames need these sort of titles if their ever to be taken seriously by the media and non gamers and we as gamers who would like games to get some recognition for once need to support new original titles that try something different.

Absoloutly spot on Ratty. Particularly the bit about gamers complaining for inovation but ultimately being creatures of habit. Heavy Rain has the potential to be something huge, but because it's not shooting someone/thing down the lens of a gun it's doubtful that it'll sell as well as it should.

Regardless of that though, HR is second only to FF13 in my most anticipated games of the year. As long as it doesn't suffer from the same problem that plagued it's cousin Farenheit (aka, the bizarre ending) then I'm not worrying too much and will definitely be buying at launch.

I'm always saying that gamers don't know what they want. The same franchises sell every year and people continue to buy them.

I hope it does well although I won't be getting it for obvious reasons.

I just hope from a story perspective, the whole game doesn't go loony and a bit crap at the end, like Fahrenheit. I was really enjoying that until it went a bit, well, wierd.
